This Valentine’s Day, we are celebrating LGBTQI+ month which has been present in the UK since 2004. The month was established as a result of campaigning from the organisation, Schools Out UK, who aim to make schools and educational institutions safe spaces for LGBTQI+ individuals.
This year, the theme is Poetry, Prose and Plays in memory of Lyra Mckee, a journalist from Northern Ireland who was fatally shot in Derry in 2019. The month presents an opportunity to learn about LGTBQI+ history, educate others about LGBTQI+ issues and promote an overall safer and more inclusive society. Events are held across the country, of which many are free to attend, with a full list available here.
